However, since it is a part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), you have the option of using other travel documents aside from the conventional US passport book. You can use the US passport card.  A difference from some other WHTI destinations is that your State-issued enhanced driver’s license isn’t accepted here. Also, take note that you are not required to apply for a visa to visit the Bahamas.

Using a US passport card is the more convenient and cheaper option when it comes to your travel documents. The price of applying for a passport card is around half the price of a regular passport book. Keep in mind, however, that the processing time for this type of passport is still the same as a regular passport, so make sure you apply for one early.

If you’re after flexibility, however, get yourself a US passport book. Unlike the passport card, which you can only use in WHTI areas, you can use your passport book for any destination practically anywhere in the world. It is a little pricier than the card counterpart, but makes up for it with its wide range of uses. If you’re a backpacker or a frequent traveler, the passport book is the option for you.

The reason we’re saying this is that the passport card is somewhat limited in its travel use. You can only use the passport card when you’re traveling to WHTI destinations either by sea or by land. But don’t worry, as you can apply for both types of passports in order to have the best of both worlds: the convenience and affordability of passport cards, and the flexibility of passport books. What’s more, you can get a huge discount if you apply for both types of passports.

Aside from the passport, the government at the Bahamas may require additional documents for your entry. To confirm whether you need additional documents, checking with their Embassy in the US is recommended. Do this before you leave for the Bahamas.

When you finally arrive at the Bahamas, make it a point to register with the nearest US Embassy or Consulate immediately. The reason for this is that the Embassy will find it easier to assist you whenever you need something if you are registered. Chances are that somebody told you that you need a new passport to visit St. Thomas even if you’re a US citizen. This can be confusing. The confusion likely started when the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) was enforced recently. According to the WHTI, you’ll need to present a passport book or a passport card when visiting territories including those in the Caribbean. And since St. Thomas is in that area, people assumed that you’ll also be required to present your passport there. But St. Thomas is a US territory, and you therefore don’t need a US passport to get there.

But you are of course free to bring your passport with you. For your convenience, you could just bring your passport card, rather than your passport book. Now what is a passport card? It’s a lightweight alternative to the passport book that you can bring when traveling by land or sea to WHTI areas. So if you want to travel light, the passport card can easily slip into your wallet.

Again, do you need an American passport to go to St. Thomas? Not if you are an American Citizen coming from another US territory, otherwise you will need to bring your American passport. Just make sure that you bring any government-issued document with you to help prove your citizenship whenever it’s required.
