Two nautical charts overlap on the ship’s navigation table. Never surveyed waters surround the ship, according to both charts. Our captain maintains a safe course using depth soundings. Though he travels the Antarctic frequently, the captain hasn’t ever sailed this channel.

The sun sets and our ability to see is reduced. After that, the heavy, thick snow starts to fall.I struggle to see the approaching icebergs as the large flakes fill the bridge windows. Thankfully, the floating barriers appear clearly on the radar. The screen is filled with various blobs of oranges, signifying icebergs. One gigantic orange mass emanates from the screen. We are three kilometers from it. You need to visit this site to learn about antarctica travel guide.

The captain finally issues a quiet order at one kilometer. The ship changes direction with the adept handling of the helmsman. Fog and snow cloud our vision, but we see a spooky sight; the tabular iceberg, which can only be seen in the southern ocean, appears. The top is extremely flat and wide, and the sides rise straight up. This one is over one hundred feet tall.

Not for the first time, has the sheer magnitude of Antarctica stopped me in my tracks. On our journey to the bottom of the globe, we’re cruising in a polar-class vessel. We’d passed extremely removed areas of land and some of the least life-filled places on the planet. After being discovered in 1820, another 79 years went by before a human spent the winter there. Scientists followed the explorers who quickly attempted to find the southern pole. Now you don’t have to be an independently-wealthy individual to travel to Antarctica. For about the same cost of visiting a Caribbean island, you can see Antarctica.

Think of Antarctica in terms of a manta ray with a curving tail. Between the very tip of the tail and the very tip of South America sits five hundred miles of water. This stretch of seas is called Drakes Passage and is notorious for its turbulent waters.Reaching Antarctica by passing through this area, which has also been called the ‘Slobbering Jaws of Hell’, is difficult, but worthwhile. We followed the advice of one passenger, who suggested we make sure everything was stowed and that the porthole latches of our cabins were secure before we went to bed. Learn about adventure antarctica tours.

After leaving Ushuaia in Argentina, we traveled through the smooth waters of the Beagle Channel and into the open ocean. The next two days were spent on very rough waters, without so much as a glimpse of land. The wind approached gale force for the entire time. As waves crashed on the bow, spray splashed above my fourth deck window. Depending on the level of your seasickness, you could see swells from 15 to 40 feet.

We got to the Southern Ocean after two days on the sea. I saw a coastal archipelago first thing that morning. The land seemed to have a calming affect on the rough waters. Clouds dressed mile-high mountain peaks. The glaciers and ridges were dramatically different; the smooth whiteness of the glaciers seemed light years away from the angular darkness of the ridges. The continents ice slipped into the ocean in giant choppy blocks of chipped and garbled mess.It looks like a huge mountain range has been plopped into the middle of the ocean.

One passenger relates our trip to this place to the labor of childbirth. Antarctica is the world?s windiest, driest, coldest and highest continent. Though the surface holds seventy percent of the world’s freshwater in reserve, Death Valley gets the same amount of precipitation as its polar plateau. This continent doesn’t have an indigenous human population, animals that call it home all year round, or even an owner.

We have to rely upon the weather to plan where to sail or when and where to land on shore in this inclement area. Even though the guides had warned us to be prepared for waiting, our first scheduled landfall became a reality. Our assigned groups meet on deck. An inflatable boat hauls my group of ten across the water. We only have one more quarter mile of water to cross before we reach the land. And then, with one simple step, I am in the small group of humans who has ever touched Antarctic ice.

This well traveled tourist has seen a large part of our planet. This ninety-one year-old has now visited Antarctica too. She didn’t rely on second-hand images from television or magazines, but rather, she went there herself. It was the first time she?d set eyes on Antarctica, though she?d been in the same region twice previously. Though they never actually touched down, they did travel over the land.

As she flew above Antarctica for four hours, she was able to see glaciers, fjords, and mountain peaks. They even got within 300 feet of the ground. Fog inundated one mountain peak. Perfect weather accompanied their flight; it was clear and sunny. They flew through sub-zero air, even though it was just at the end of the Antarctic summer. The passengers were able to hear a continent researcher lecture during the flight. You’ll get further resources on Cruises to Antarctica by visiting there.

The 91 year-old really wished she could see penguins during her flight over Antarctica. Though she didn?t see any on the flight, her daughter was able to see a colony of penguins in the distance. A cruise ship took them to the Falkland Islands, which are right by Argentina. Luckily, while visiting the East Island there, she was able to see hundreds of Magellan penguins. These are the tallest penguins on earth.

The cruise set sail from South America, to which the travelers had spent sixteen hours in the air from the United States. Passengers could opt to swim in the ship?s pool, in addition to traveling to many ports of call. She jumped right in, not worrying about how very cold it was, and earned a certificate for having done so.

After the ship reached Chile, the tourists were driven to Santiago, which they toured. They then flew to Rio. Ideal weather held for the entire three week cruise. All passengers saw the Southern Cross, a notoriously difficult to find constellation, in the clear night sky. You can get the best antarctic cruise reviews information by visiting this website.

She?d been to South American prior to this trip. Our ninety-one year-old tourist centered her visit on a major river cruise and one big city. She returned to the rain forest surrounding that major rivers and witnessed the severe destruction that had befallen it in the few years since her last visit. She worries about the loss of bird habitat. She has also visited Africa and gone on a Safari.Because she?d already seen, Antarctica was her final continent to conquer. She did that with her four hour flight above Antarctica.

The pink mite, which is the most southern-living creature yet found, is only about 1/100th of an inch long. Looking very similar to a spider, it dines on algae and fungi. An entomologist from Hawaii recently discovered this mite only 309 miles from the South Pole. Lichens have been discovered within 266 miles of the Pole, as well. This is the closest any living organism has ever been found.

Insects and their family are the only animals that can stay on Antarctica all year long. A recent magazine article reported this. Although your eye can’t see them, around 56 species of arthropods have been found there. At about the same size as a horsefly, a wingless fly is the biggest. The animals reanimate when the air reaches temperatures above thirty-two degrees Fahrenheit. They are asleep during Antarctica’s long, hard winter. You will find info on Antarctic cruises by visiting that site.

While the continent itself is barren and lifeless, there are all manner of animals traversing the Antarctic oceans, like the giant blue whale, which dwarfs every other living creature. At one point, scientist sought to observe the sea’s creatures by lowering a steel capsule under the ice. It measured six by four feet. The professionals each took turns climbing into the make-shift lab, and looked out the windows at the dark, cold world around them. The sounds made by ocean life could be recorded because of the hydrophone the scientists built into the pod.

A giant jelly fish passed by, with 30 foot tentacles. Not many other fish were seen. The chamber did prove very interesting to local seals. They thoroughly examined the chamber. Scientists could hear them chirp, beep, buzz and whistle through the hydrophone. This underwater cacophony was a first for at least one scientist.

The noises, created by the Weddell seals, could be used for sonar navigation and as a means of communication. Navigation theories are supported by the difficult nature of finding both air holes and food in Antarctic. The sounds the seals have made are being thoroughly examined here. Our human range of hearing can’t even pick up on some of the more extremely pitched sounds made by the seals. If you are in search of info don’t forget to view this resource great Antarctic cruise.

Scientists don’t know how Weddell seals make all their sounds. To remain airtight underwater, they shut their mouths and nostrils. The deepest a mammal has ever been recorded to dive is nearly 1500 feet; this was a Weddell seal. They’ve even tracked on seal who stayed underwater for 28 minutes before needing to breathe. A zoologist was able to collect a sample of mother’s milk from a Weddell seal. Seal milk has a much higher fat ratio than human milk does. This is one of the reasons that baby seals can gain weight more quickly than any other mammal. After six weeks, baby seals should weigh five times more than when they were born.

The Antarctic seas have been traversed time and time again by wetsuited scientists. The ocean floor hosts lots of multi-hued seaweed, including red. They also found red and white species of starfish, five foot long worms and sponges that measured four feet in diameter.

Uranium is being searched for in the Antarctic by two scientists. Much controversy is associated with this project as it is seen to be a severe test for international cooperation. When Antarctica became a continent that was set aside in 1961, it was for international scientific research. Such resources that are protected by frigid weather and a sinister cover of snow can be detrimental to the strain added to the model of international cooperation especially when there is the goal of increasing interest.

Brief are the summers in Antarctica and this was the time when the scientists and their West German colleagues went on helicopter rides above the snow free valleys where they were given the best view of the continent. It was said by the gentlemen that the helicopter rides were unpleasant. The radioactivity detector they had should not be further than a few hundred feet from the cliffs. It is recommended that you visit this site for resources on Antarctic Cruise.

Other than uranium, there were a multitude of valuable resources available there. In most cases, the difficulties involved in locating and exploiting this wealth are immense, but few doubt that within the next few decades this will become increasingly practical.

Techniques for harvesting krill are being studied today by a Polish fleet, it is an inexpensive protein source found in the Weddell Sea that looks like a shrimp. There were Soviets who found high grade iron ore in a mountain. Traces of ethane and methane were found in 1973 in the Ross Sea by an American research vessel. Such traces are considered indicators of potential natural gas deposits and sometimes oil deposits.

It was the US Geological Survey that came out with results stating how the continental shelf of Antarctica could easily hold 45 billion barrels of oil and 115 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. When compared to the annual US consumption, this is eight times and six times more for oil and natural gas. In this year comes the support from the National Science Foundation for geologists who will survey the Dufec Intrusive. Available here are chromium and platinum deposits in the same way as in the mineral rich areas and the bush veld of South Africa. If you’re looking to learn about Great Antarctic Cruise, visit their site for more details.

As America prompted for an Antarctic treaty, there were a number of nations that agreed to it during the celebration held for the International Geophysical Year. They pledged not to pursue their territorial claims as several overlap to use the continent only for peaceful purposes, to preserve its unique environment and wildlife, and to conduct completely open scientific research. To help out, the National Science Foundation administered American bases.

An issue pertaining to resource exploitation was seriously considered at the treaty nations meeting in Oslo. Here, all changes must be decided upon unanimously. Sensitive is the issue that pertains to the interest in valuable resources of other countries. It was said by both scientists that from the continent’s resources could come about a number of discoveries. Probably the most severe test for the cooperation among nations is resource development in the Antarctic as almost everyone agrees with.

The total continent of Antarctica, from its massive mountains to the seas replete with blue whales, emperor penguins and leopard seals, is, by means of international agreement, classified as a wilderness preserve. This accord took effect in 1998, and prohibits mining and oil drilling for at least fifty years anywhere within the boundaries of the world’s most frigid and pristine ecosystem. The pact stresses conservation in place of growth and development. The agreement forbids a number or possible threats to wildlife including pesticides and non-native animals.

The accord is called the Environmental Protection Protocol to the Antarctica Treaty. Many countries signed this accord in order to protect this one region on earth from commercial interests and development by industry. The treaty was approved in 1991 by 26 leading nations including the United States, Russia, China, India, Japan, Argentina, Brazil and most major European countries who had interests in the area.To find great antarctica tours information see this resource.

By delineating regulation, the treaty served to end more than fifteen years of lobbying by environmentalists and diplomatic discussions. In addition to the restriction of oil and mining, the treaty also requires nations that run any of Antarctica’s 35 scientific outposts to remove all trash.Antarctic waters are also protected from scientific stations and tourist ships dumping raw sewage into them.

Explorers such as the Norwegian Roald Amundsen, the first to reach the South Pole in 1911, depended upon sled dogs for their transportation. But the treaty bans dogs completely because in recent years, dogs have killed Penguins amongst other native birds. Also banned were pesticides, polystyrene packaging and non-sterile soil.

There is a sheet of ice covering the land that averages approximately one mile in thickness. The land is only seen near the shores where some plant life survive, like moss and grass.Seventy per cent of the planet’s fresh water comprises Antarctica’s ice. Many kinds of sea life also live in or near Antarctica. If you want more comprehensive info on adventure antarctica tours that site will help you.

This amazing continent is considered one of the most fragile places on the planet.Since the temperature is almost always below zero, it takes a long time for anything to grow.It can take years for the area to recover from any disturbances. For instance, the single impression of a foot in a mossy outcropping may be preserved for ten years.

In 1959 the first Antarctic Treaty was signed and it banned military activity and nuclear testing. It also kept any one nation from owning all of Antarctica and gave rules for research.Even though there is no nation that claims ownership of the continent, every inch is claimed by overlapping countries.

Conservation laws were put into place in the 1980s when researchers found oil reserves offshore and deposits of coal, gold, iron, copper, zinc, uranium, manganese and other minerals. The ideas of drilling in Antarctica got tossed around in the 1970s when the energy crisis took place.Increases in the price of oil and advances in technology will intensify these interests.

Each of the 26 nations that uphold the treaty have their own jurisdictions. If the country’s government refuses to intervene when its citizens violate the rules, the other nations would apply pressure to solve the issue. This agreement has been considered a success story for the environment by a lot of people.

The continent of Antarctica is a place like no other in the world with its stark beauty and brutal climate and terrain. It remains the only continent in the world that has never seen the face of war. This is true even though it is the biggest continent on Earth, larger than Europe and America put together. Due to the extreme cold of this continent almost no germs can survive in this land, causing more people have died of violent causes than natural ones

This continent is quite the oxymoron, the most different of faiths and political stances cam come here and work closely together only inches away from freezing sub 100-degree weather.Since the horrendous cold of Antarctica makes their bodies lose calories at an alarming rate, those living in Antarctica are forced to eat four generous meals a day just to keep up.

Since the sun hardly ever sets in the summer, residents often suffer excruciating insomnia, as the lack of nighttime leaves them unable to sleep while the sun is shining bright at 3 in the morning. In spite of this, the Antarctica based ‘300 Degree Club’ has given rise to great entertainment.A bar the furthest south of the border exists in Antarctica, no matter what you buy it all costs the same, even if it is an expensive cognac. But a single night can lead to a massive bill. This is especially true between the months of April and September when the nights are very long.antarctica cruise ship

The heartland of this continent is covered by a 9,000-foot sheet of moving ice. However, geologists believe that it also has enough gas, oil, and coal in it to heath the entire planet. There are no laws in this land and no fugitive can be extradited. Plus, any criminal has almost 9-million square miles of place to hide, if they could survive them. These hiding spaces include the wide open spaces, broad valleys, and 15,000-foot mountain ranges that make up one of the unfriendly environments on the face of the Earth.

Even though Antarctica is not governed by any laws, it still has a lower crime rate than any other continent. If you wanted to commit a murder, you would do it in Antarctica, because you could never be prosecuted for it due to the lack of laws there. No international laws or treaties are in place to stop a murderer, anywhere on this vast land.adventure antarctica cruises

Even though there are flags of 10 different nation here in Antarctica, not a single one has tried to exploit it’s real estate. There has never been any attempts to form permanent colonies on the primitive lands of this continent. However, when compared to any other location in the world, the most complicated and technology advanced equipment is located here. There are even computers at the South Pole.

It may be surprising to know that the people who live here, although usually only for a short period, are known to have the highest IQ per capita on the planet. There are more people here with degrees from high level universities than there are high school diplomas. There is more research preformed here than in any other geographical location. If you want to find scientific talent, you will find more here than at any university in the world. Also, this large land mass is the only one who you are not allowed to detonate nuclear bombs.

The laws that Antarctica does have are incredibly strict environmental laws.Whalers and sealers now need a special license to kill any animal life on the continent. The worlds best scientists are fighting to keep this astonishing continent as pristine as it has ever been.

A hundred years ago or so, a whaling ship known as the Antarctic came to a halt off the volcanic, wind-battered coast and sent one of their longboats through the through the rough ocean of the Ross Sea to reach the shore. The land was found as part of a journey to unclaimed waters for the purpose of killing whales. Captain Leonard Kristensen and his party were the first people to place their feet on this continent.

The baptism of Antarctica was bathed in blood. The Industrial Revolution was starting to grow and the millions of seals that were slaughtered for their fur, as well as penguins and whales massacred for their oil, were part of what was needed to keep society moving forward. Many thousands of the shy penguins on Macquarie Island were gathered and driven up planks into large kettles of boiling oil, where they were cooked and melted down for the oil in their bodies.

It is only now, after centuries of abuse of Antarctica’s resources, that this Frozen Continent is being appreciated for it’s natural and scientific wonders. Humans have made the decision to forgo the easy money made through destruction of Antarctica’s resources, and instead chosen to treat it as a preserve of nature and science. There are discussions currently underway to establish Antarctica as a world park.Within Antarctica, scientists are more able to explore certain environmental factors such as the Greenhouse Effect and the depletion of our ozone layer.Considering the short and experimental nature of mankind’s occupancy in Antarctica, the reversal has been astoundingly quick. The degree of exploration was limited to a small fraction of coastline and islands, and included only a few routes to the South Pole up until the 1957-1958 International Geophysical Year.antarctic cruise

From the time that Antarctica was first explored, its history is littered with fierceness, nationalism, idealism, and uncontrolled killing. Only occasionally would there be any attempts at scientific research.Whaling was stepped up in World War I, as refined oil was used to make glycerin for artillery shells.Whale oil continued to be a commodity after World War II, as the Soviet Union and the United States began to require more of the substance for use as a jet engine lubricant. It was not until the International Geophysical Year that Antarctica was referred to as anything but “Terra Australia Incognita,” a term used by medieval mapmakers to describe this undiscovered southern continent.

The first birth in Antarctic was witness to great controversy and nationalistic pretension and was entirely purposeful. In 1978, Emilio Marcus Palmer was born at Esperanza Base, owned by Argentina in order to reinforce claims by Argentina to large portions of the territory.best antarctic cruise

This occurred nine years after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the moon and placed America’s flag on it as a symbol of America’s dominance over other nations. In 1911, Roald Amundsen’s trek to the South Pole, honoring King Haakon VII of Norway, was the most productive, determined venture of this sort.Although Robert F. Scott and his team also made that trip for the British, they spent a great deal more time on their voyage so that they could collect rock and fossil samples – the weight of which only slowed them down further.

Scott’s team perished as they returned home, having lost the race to the South Pole to Amundsen by one month. They were possibly demoralized by simply not getting there first, but were also likely malnourished and exhausted. These were the first men to martyr themselves for science in Antarctica.A rather unique attempt to stake America’s claim on the territory took place when a Ford Trimotor was flown over the South Pole by Richard Bryd in 1929.It was back in 1821 that the Soviets laid claim to the Antarctica with the journey made by Russian Admiral Thaddeus Bellingshausen past the Antarctic Peninsula.
