Does fake tanning before going on a tropical holiday prevent sunburn?

A lot of people will fake tan before they go on holidays somewhere tropical to prevent getting a sun burn, but I heard somewhere that tanning beds and so on do not use the same ray type as the sun so even if you are nice and browned from fake tanning you will still experience burns from the different types of rays that the sun radiates. Is this true?
And when i say “fake tan” i mean like tanning beds, not the spray.

you are correct. Fake tans don’t protect against sunburn because they don’t stimulate the melanin cells the way sunlight does.

No, a fake tan DOES NOT prevent sunburn…..

While it doesn’t PREVENT a sunburn, it can decrease your chances of getting a sunburn. Your skin (and mine) is more likely to burn if it is lighter. Take, for example, a red head. Most red heads have fair or light skin. Not by coincidence, they also get sunburns more easily. I’ve been going on vacations for 4 years now in early spring travelling from a northern state to Florida, Texas, or Hawaii and each year I “fake” tan before I go. Because I spend the majority of time on the beach, I do get a slight burn, but it is far less than if I had NOT built a base tan.

Are you talking about fake tanning as a tanning bed or the real fake tan that comes in a spray? Sunscreen prevents sunburn. No fake tan of any kind will prevent sunburn. Tanning beds increase your chances of getting FATAL skin cancer (melanoma) by 55%. That is HORRIBLE.
I cannot believe with the number of young girls getting skin cancer that you all still think you can lie in the sun and nothing will happen to you. Unbelievable.
